Laos implements projects in Development Triangle

Vientiane (VNA) - Laos will carry out economic projects in its three southern provinces in the Cambodia - Laos - Vietnam Development Triangle by the end of this year.

Laos has received financial assistance from the Japanese government to implement five projects worth 7.5 million USD in the development triangle. The projects include the construction of an inter-provincial road and two hospitals in Salavan province, a bridge spanning Sekong river in Attapeu province, and seven primary schools in the two above-said provicnes and Sekong province.

The three provinces have over the past time exerted efforts to attract domestic and foreign investment. Attapeu province granted licenses to 13 companies, including seven foreign businesses, involve in wood processing, industrial crop planting and services in 2008.

Sekong attracted five Japanese-funded projects, two Republic of Korea-funded primary school construction projects and two socio-economic development projects with funding from Vietnam.

Meanwhile, Salavan province granted licenses to almost 60 industrial, agro-forestry and service projects.

Established in 2004 by a decision signed by the three countries’ prime ministers, the Development Triangle comprises Vietnam’s central highlands provinces of Gia Lai, Kon Tum, Dak Lak and Dak Nong, Laos’ provinces of Attapeu, Sekong and Salvan, and the Cambodian provinces of Rattanakiri, Strungstreng and Moldonkiri.-Enditem
